Tranquillity

It is Seniors Month – October 2025 – A Prompt to Write

Cadequez, Spain

The softest and most gentle breeze, water lapping against the rocks, this is the moment sleep comes. This scene is imagined and with it the memory of a day of walking in sunshine exploring Cadequez on Spain’s Costa Brava: a whitewashed coastal town is an apt description. The tiredness of the body is soothing after a day of exercise: 16,000 steps including an early morning run along a path on the edge of the water. Dinner with a view across the bay as streetlights and homes create a distinctive form of beauty, compared to the day’s sunlight. This is what leads to a sleep that is deep and peaceful, only for a short time.

Awake, there is no returning to this tranquillity. The hard bed, cream colour walls, airconditioned temperature is the actuality. A documentary of a life well lived is viewed from within, images and words portraying a journey from childhood to this. Impressions of joy, regret, safety, fear, laughter, despair, love lost and love found, with a sense of a restlessness that underlies the story of this life. Was there ever a state of tranquillity? Maybe death brings tranquillity. This is only an assumption, an assumption that at this point gives a degree of comfort.

Tranquillity seems close and distant as the next phase is elusive. Is it time to diminish hope? There will be no decision. A wave of tranquillity with the softest and most gentle breeze, water lapping against the rocks, this is the moment death comes.
