An Awakening

Silence and darkness,

Black granite below.

Brushed stainless steel,

White cupboards and blinds.

Silence and stillness,

A blackbird warbles.

Loud footsteps coming,

Harsh light I adjust.

A soft gentle touch,

I am awakened.

The footsteps and touch,

A contradiction.

Gentle footsteps near,

Ones I know move past,

Take little notice.

Different footsteps,

I know and don’t know,

It is her with them.

Strong hands hold tightly,

Warmth and comfort,

I am use to this.

This is different,

Lighter hands hold me.

A comparison.

A soft gentle touch,

The coffee machine,

Turned off, alone.

Quietness again,

Silence and sunshine.

In Brunswick at home.

This piece was inspired by members of my writing group. One of our writers tells the story of what Mona Lisa sees as tourists and locals walk toward and past her painting. Another writer tells a story from the perspective of a tree describing the people who live in a home where the tree grows in the front yard. The other inspiration was a poem in its simplicity and power of a personal experience.
