The X – Ray

Cathy Beesey, Founder Stories Connecting Us

Darkness and drab. No natural light. Walls nondescript colour. Struggling for air.

Alone and waiting. Perched on chair. A privacy curtain. Fearful to close. She patiently waits.

The X – Ray. Given with compassion. He quietly speaks. “I wish you … the very best. I really do.” Her fear increased. Lesions on lungs. Most likely cancer. Years of experience. He believes this.

Fatigue overwhelms her. Movement is limited. He watches intently. His face serious. Sadness, no smile. Despair, no hope.  She sees this. All of this. In a moment.

She knows nothing. Except visit doctor. Maybe to hospital. Take X – Ray.

Diagnosis in hospital. It isn’t cancer.  An autoimmune disorder. She remembers him. Sees his face.  He feared something. Does he wonder? Want the outcome. Never finding out. She now knows.

These memories were triggered by a visit to my local medical centre to create a health plan. The nurse was new and she finds the notes from this X-Ray. I try to write about it, it isn’t working. In my writing group Helen O’Connor shares her writing using three word sentence technique. It is perfect. I go home and write.

If you haven’t read Helen’s piece here it is
